Ankle Pain Relief and Injury

Editor: Dr. Amy Spencer, PT, DPT, OCS, MTC, CSCS, CKTP - A Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Certified Manual Therapist. Owner and Physical Therapist, Specialized Physical Therapy in North Reading, MA.

The complex ankle joint is made up of two joints: the talocrural joint and the subtalar joint. The bones of the ankle include the shin bone (tibia), the thinner Specialized Physical Therapy Ankle Pain Relief and Injurybone at the outside of the lower leg (fibula), and the foot bone (talus), which sits above the heel bone (calcaneus). The tibia, fibula, and talus make up the true ankle joint (Talocrural). This joint allows for up-and-down movements of the foot. The subtalar joint sits below the ankle joint and is comprised of the talus and calcaneus. This joint enables your foot to move side-to-side. Numerous ligaments surround the ankle and subtalar joints holding the bones of the leg to each other and to those of the foot. All of these bones and joints are necessary to support the weight of your body and the stress of physical movement.

These are the five most common ankle injuries that can be successfully treated using physical therapy:

  1. Achilles Tendonitis
  2. Posterior Tibialis Tendonitis
  3. Ankle Sprain
  4. High Ankle Sprain
  5. Ankle Fracture
